Internal monologue/ inner voice/ inner speech/ endophasia/ self talk/ inner discourse
So, what actually it is
In "Handbook Of Diachronic Narratology" Hirsh Define internal monologue as "the direct representation of the character's thoughts"
Or In a very simple and short sentence internal monologue or inner voice is "The conversation with oneself or stream of thoughts runs inside a person's mind"
Dr. Ethan Kross describes the inner monologue as "Silent verbal processing"
یعنی inner voice دراصل وہ آواز ہے جو ہماری سوچوں کو زبان دیتی ہے یا الفاظ کی صورت بیان کرتی ہے بنا بیرونی آواز کے (reproduction of voice in our head without moving our lips or making any sound)
Both of these are entirely different
It is based on our moral values and ethical principles and it relies on the moral cognition network while an internal monologue
Hope so, k yahan tak samjh aa gai ho gi
Ok so let's move to its types:
Internal monologue has 4 types
📌 Dialogic (it's more like conversation
📌 Evaluative/ critical (in which we judge, critics, our own actions, choices
📌 Positive/ regulatory ( it's like an encouraging coach inside our head)
📌 Condensed ( short, fragmented sentences sometimes just a word )
Ok so I think some people experience all types (me me 😭)
Anyways!
Lev Vygotsky a Soviet psychologist presents his idea in 1934 in his Book "Thinking and speech"
He described three stages of speech development
"Social speech
Private Speech
Inner Speech"
According to him "inner speech is not innate but learned through social interaction roughly between the ages of 5 and 7 and language merges fully with the thoughts and the child starts experiencing silent speech"
سمجھ گئے ہو تو چلو پھر آگے بڑھتے ہیں اور بات کرتے ہیں which brain areas are actually involve in internal monologue
So, actually while having an inner voice there's an articulation between the Prefrontal cortex (The Conductor), Speech production areas (The Articulator) and the Auditory cortex (The Mind's ear)
Key brain areas
📌 Broca's area (form words and sentences)
📌 Wernicke's area (understand language)
📌 Motor or premotor cortex (but with weaker signals which prevent it from triggering physical motor activity)
📌 Default mode network (it actually is brain's daydreaming mode, light up when you start focusing on your inner thoughts, connect past stories with future planning and also handle self reflection)
Done with this ?
Okie so let's jump to the most important question
Can we control it ?
And the answer is "Yes, we can"
By:
▫️Notice the voice
▫️Create distance (this is what I do 😭 جب جب کوئی چیز پریشان کرنے لگتی ہے یا بہت overwhelming ہو جاتی ہے I simply spoke my name aloud "شانزے!
▫️Focus on small actions
▫️Use mindfulness
"Done with internal monologue"
And the answer is again "Yes" (Gwassssshhhhhhh) Yes such people really exist in the town jinho NY kabhi koi awaz nai sunni and this Condition is called "Anendophasia"
صرف دو سال پہلے Johanne Nedergaard and Gary Lupyan یہ اصطلاح استعمال کی تھی which is defined as
"Absence or near absence of inner voice"
People with anendophasia think but not by using inner voice instead of hearing words they might think in "Images, Feelings and abstract concepts"
یعنی وہ سوچتے ہیں مگر الفاظ کے ذریعے نہیں، وہ الفاظ کو اپنے ذہن میں دہرا نہیں سکتے انہیں کوئی آواز سنائی نہیں دیتی بلکہ وہ ان الفاظ کو دیکھ سکتے like text on screen اور وہ دل میں پڑھ بھی نہیں سکتے (منہ زبانی 🥲) they have to read aloud even when they want to talk with themselves
Jesse Kosak a person with anendophasia describes his thoughts as "Bubbles Rising into consciousness"
یعنی وہ لوگ ہر چیز کو دیکھ سکتے ہیں so I think they have strong imagination may be!
اٹھارویں صدی کے آخر میں Francis Galton نے پہلی بار کچھ ایسے کیسز دیکھے تھے and named them "non visualizers"
Aphantasia in 2015 Adam Zeman coined this term, a condition where people can't visualize things in their head or can't create mental images
They think using"Abstract Concepts, Logical Reasoning, Conceptual Processing"
▫️ Neuroscience (people with aphantasia have connctivity deficit) Brain areas i.e. Frontoparietal network (imp. For attention, awareness, working memory) have lesser functional connctivity .
.......
Done from my side hope Kuch Kuch samjh aye hoga if you something related to topic feel free to tell me.
